Coming Soon: The Raven Tower

I’ve been quiet lately, not just here, but my other social media hangouts. Sorry about that! Things are a bit chaotic at Casa Leckie just now.

But! My novel The Raven Tower will be out February 26! In fact, if you’re in St Louis you’ll be able to find me at Left Bank Books! It’s part of their SF STL series, which honestly you should be checking out, if you’re in the area and into SFF. In February alone they’ll be having the fabulous Charlie Jane Anders, and Jasper Fforde!

Anyway. The Raven Tower! Advance copies have been going around, and there have been some very flattering reviews.

And as if all that isn’t exciting enough, the audiobook is narrated by the amazing Adjoa Andoh. And you can hear a sample of the first five minutes right here. She’s a wonderful reader and I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear she’d agreed to do The Raven Tower.

Anyway, there you go. It’s getting to be Book Countdown time. I seriously can’t wait for you all to be able to read this, and I hope you enjoy it.

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate

So, there’s this band. They’re called Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate. They’re a London rock band, and they’ve got science fictiony sensibilities–like, check out their 2016 album When The Kill Code Fails.

So, their newest release is Out of Mind, and one of the tracks is called “When I Was A Ship” and yes, they do mean that ship.

This song was inspired by Ann Leckie’s Ancillary series. The main character had once been a warship, whose artificial mind had been distributed within the ship, and also within many ancillaries – prisoners who have had their minds wiped. The ship itself and all of the other ancillaries was destroyed, leaving just one fragment of the mind left in one body.

So, like, that’s a thing that happened.

You can hear “When I Was A Ship” on Spotify. You can also purchase it at Bandcamp, along with When The Kill Code Fails and their other albums. I’ve been listening to WtKCF for the past few days and really enjoying it.

Tillie Walden at The Novel Neighbor

Posted on:

Hello! Been a while!

I’ve been pretty busy–revisions and then copyedits for The Raven Tower. (Which btw you can pre-order from the bookstore of your choice!) And travel. I went places. I’m just back and recovering from ICON in Tel Aviv, which was a lovely convention full of lovely people! I had a wonderful time. I am still somewhat jetlagged, but that’s the price for all the fun.

But you don’t have to go all the way to Israel to see me! If you’re in St Louis, you can come to The Novel Neighbor tomorrow evening–that would be Tuesday, October 2, at 7pm–to hear me in conversation with Tillie Walden, whose lovely webcomic-turned-book On A Sunbeam will be out and of course for sale.

Not familiar with Ms Walden? Well, she’s one of the youngest people ever to win an Eisner Award. Seriously, you should check out her work. And you should totally come down to The Novel Neighbor on Tuesday evening.

The Novel Neighbor is at 7905 Big Bend Blvd., Webster Groves, MO 63119, and the event is from 7pm-8:30pm. See you there!

Places I’ll Be in the Near Future

Posted on:

I’ve been neglecting the blog, sorry! I’m head down in revisions for The Raven Tower.

But I’ll be some places in St Louis over the next couple of weeks! This coming Wednesday I’ll be at Left Bank Books–not for myself, but to chat with Chandler Klang-Smith, author of The Sky Is Yours. It’s a fascinating book, and I think it will be a great evening. I gather Left Bank is planning to do more SF-related evenings over the coming year, so you might want to keep an eye on that!

Nebula Award Finalists!

Posted on:

Hey, everybody, look at this awesome list of finalists for this year’s Nebula Awards!

It’s full of either stuff I’ve read and loved, or stuff I’m really looking forward to reading! Followers of this blog will recognize a few titles as things I’ve recommended in the recent past–like Fonda Lee’s Jade City, and J.Y. Yang’s Black Tides of Heaven. And Martha Wells’ All Systems Red!

Over at File 770, JJ has a list of the nominees with links to free, online excerpts or full copies of the finalists, so check that out for some great reading.

I couldn’t be happier with this group of finalists. Congratulations, all, and for those of you who are up there for the first time–How wonderful and exciting! Take a deep breath if you need it. You’re all awesome, and I am so delighted for you.

BookFest St Louis–this weekend!

Posted on:

So, here I am in St Louis and if you saw yesterday’s blog post you might have noticed there are no St Louis dates on the tour.

BUT.

Thanks to Left Bank Books, there’ll be an event in the Central West End called BookFest St. Louis. There will be lots of writers there, and the vast majority of panels and whatnot are free! (I think there are, like, two exceptions.)

There’s going to be a Science Fiction panel at 5pm on Saturday, September 23, with Charlie Jane Anders, Annalee Newitz, Mark Tiedemann….and me!

If you are in St Louis this weekend, come to BookFest! Left Bank Books is a lovely store with a very nice SF section and worth visiting on its own, but just look at all the folks who are going to be here! Do come to the CWE this weekend if you can!

Provenance Preview! Read the First Three Chapters Now!

So, Provenance will be out in a bit more than a month! I can’t wait for folks to read it, honestly.

Not long ago, you had a chance to read the opening, oh I’d say half first chapter, for free online. And maybe that just whetted your appetite and now you have to wait until nearly the end of September for the rest?

Well, if you sign up for my newsletter, you can get all of Chapter 1, plus chapters 2 and 3! You might see a black banner across the top of my website asking you to sign up for the newsletter, with a text box for entering your email. You can use that, or if you’ve dismissed that click this link to go to a form you can fill out–a text box for your email, and then under that are checkboxes for which newsletters you’re signing up for. You want to check the “Ann Leckie” one, and you might or might not want to check any of the others, depending, but it’s the Ann Leckie one that will get you the chapters.

Here’s the deal–I hardly ever use my newsletter so I guarantee you won’t be spammed. What it does get used for is things like this. And for announcements of upcoming publications and such. Folks who are already signed up probably already have the chapters in their inboxes. If you aren’t signed up yet, you’ll get the chapters when you do. So, if you want to read the first three chapters early, there you go!

I’m traveling this summer!

If you look over to the righthand side of my blog, and kind of scroll down a bit, you’ll see the sidebar where I keep information about upcoming appearances. (If you’re seeing this on Dreamwidth, there’s a direct link right here.) I’ve updated it with more details about where I’ll be this summer.

Basically, I’m headed to Celsius 232 in Aviles, with a stop in Barcelona to sign books, then I’m off to Munich and Berlin, and from there I go to Birmingham and…almost certainly more things in the UK will get added to my schedule after Birmingham. Then I’m off to Uppsala, for Reception Histories of the Future.

So, keep an eye on that sidebar for more stops and more details of the ones I don’t have them for yet. I look forward to seeing you all!
