Where I’ll be next week (and a bit beyond)

I haven’t been updating much, even by my own standards, sorry!

Anyway, The Raven Tower is coming out in paperback, and if you’re in St Louis or St Charles next week, you can come see me! I’ll be at

Left Bank Books, Tuesday October 1 at 7pm
399 N. Euclid Ave.
Saint Louis, MO 63108

and

St Charles City-County Library, Kisker Road Branch, Wednesday October 2 at 7pm
1000 Kisker Rd
St Charles, MO 63304

If you’re near either of those places on those dates, stop in and say hi!

And if you miss me, I’ll also be at the University City Library on Monday, October 28 at 7pm.

I hope to see you there!

Coming Soon: The Raven Tower

I’ve been quiet lately, not just here, but my other social media hangouts. Sorry about that! Things are a bit chaotic at Casa Leckie just now.

But! My novel The Raven Tower will be out February 26! In fact, if you’re in St Louis you’ll be able to find me at Left Bank Books! It’s part of their SF STL series, which honestly you should be checking out, if you’re in the area and into SFF. In February alone they’ll be having the fabulous Charlie Jane Anders, and Jasper Fforde!

Anyway. The Raven Tower! Advance copies have been going around, and there have been some very flattering reviews.

And as if all that isn’t exciting enough, the audiobook is narrated by the amazing Adjoa Andoh. And you can hear a sample of the first five minutes right here. She’s a wonderful reader and I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear she’d agreed to do The Raven Tower.

Anyway, there you go. It’s getting to be Book Countdown time. I seriously can’t wait for you all to be able to read this, and I hope you enjoy it.

Tillie Walden at The Novel Neighbor

Hello! Been a while!

I’ve been pretty busy–revisions and then copyedits for The Raven Tower. (Which btw you can pre-order from the bookstore of your choice!) And travel. I went places. I’m just back and recovering from ICON in Tel Aviv, which was a lovely convention full of lovely people! I had a wonderful time. I am still somewhat jetlagged, but that’s the price for all the fun.

But you don’t have to go all the way to Israel to see me! If you’re in St Louis, you can come to The Novel Neighbor tomorrow evening–that would be Tuesday, October 2, at 7pm–to hear me in conversation with Tillie Walden, whose lovely webcomic-turned-book On A Sunbeam will be out and of course for sale.

Not familiar with Ms Walden? Well, she’s one of the youngest people ever to win an Eisner Award. Seriously, you should check out her work. And you should totally come down to The Novel Neighbor on Tuesday evening.

The Novel Neighbor is at 7905 Big Bend Blvd., Webster Groves, MO 63119, and the event is from 7pm-8:30pm. See you there!

Worldcon Schedule

Sorry, I haven’t been blogging at all lately! I’ve been doing lots of other things–revisions on The Raven Tower and a short story for an anthology, and more stuff that’s not worth mentioning here.

But! Worldcon approaches! And I will indeed be in San Jose. You can see the whole schedule here (though I’d check it a few times between now and the convention, I gather it might well need some updating in the next few days, for various reasons, and I’d like to give a shoutout to Mary Robinette Kowal and her fabulous team).

Here’s my schedule as of today:

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Kaffeeklatsch: Ann Leckie

Saturday August 18, 2018

Reading: Hugo Finalists – Best Novel

San Jose Convention Center , 211A

Listen to some of this year’s Hugo Novel finalists as they share their work.

So there it is, that’s where you can find me at Worldcon this year. And do please feel free to say hi if you see me around. I can’t promise I’ll have much time to stop and chat, if I’m on my way somewhere with a definite time attached (which can happen at a con), but I do want to see you! Also I plan to have badge ribbons for folks who are interested in that.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all!

Places I’ll Be in the Near Future

I’ve been neglecting the blog, sorry! I’m head down in revisions for The Raven Tower.

But I’ll be some places in St Louis over the next couple of weeks! This coming Wednesday I’ll be at Left Bank Books–not for myself, but to chat with Chandler Klang-Smith, author of The Sky Is Yours. It’s a fascinating book, and I think it will be a great evening. I gather Left Bank is planning to do more SF-related evenings over the coming year, so you might want to keep an eye on that!

BookFest St Louis–this weekend!

So, here I am in St Louis and if you saw yesterday’s blog post you might have noticed there are no St Louis dates on the tour.

BUT.

Thanks to Left Bank Books, there’ll be an event in the Central West End called BookFest St. Louis. There will be lots of writers there, and the vast majority of panels and whatnot are free! (I think there are, like, two exceptions.)

There’s going to be a Science Fiction panel at 5pm on Saturday, September 23, with Charlie Jane Anders, Annalee Newitz, Mark Tiedemann….and me!

If you are in St Louis this weekend, come to BookFest! Left Bank Books is a lovely store with a very nice SF section and worth visiting on its own, but just look at all the folks who are going to be here! Do come to the CWE this weekend if you can!

Gearing up for WorldCon: Park Edition

So, as I posted just the other day, I will be at WorldCon, and I will be on some panels!

Here’s slightly more information: MidAmericon, apparently having a nice large, open space in the Exhibit Hall, is, I gather, planning to have some sort of “river” with “parks” alongside, and park benches. This is meant to be a place where folks can sit and chat, or gather, or whatever, kind of like the awesome Fan Village at LonCon. People or groups could sponsor parks, or benches, or combinations thereof.

I couldn’t resist sponsoring the Lieutenant Awn Memorial Park. I don’t know exactly where it will be located beyond “somewhere in the exhibit hall alongside a fake river with the other parks.” I plan to spend at least some time there, so if you’re trying to track me down that’s likely a good place to start.

Depending on logistics, I will also try to leave some buttons and ribbons and maybe even pins for folks to take, in case they don’t cross paths with me. But I hope I see you!

My WorldCon Schedule

Yes, I plan to be at WorldCon! This is where I’m scheduled to be:

Thursday Aug 18, 2016

2:00 PM Kaffeeklatsch: Ann Leckie, Jack McDevitt, Jerry Pournelle, Michelle (Sagara) West
Kansas City Convention Center – 2211 (KKs)

4:00 PM SF as Protest Literature
Kansas City Convention Center – 2502A

Science fiction has a history of political and sociological undertones. The genre is the starting point for dystopian fiction, among other forms of politically engaged fiction. How has SF become the literature of protest? What are examples of historical SF protest books and who is currently writing SF literature that protests (religion, gender inequality, gender identity, technology, politics, capitalism, etc.)?

Friday Aug 19, 2016

4:00 PM Describe a World
Kansas City Convention Center – 2502B

Our panel describe a world, building it from scratch, and Rob Carlos will illustrate it as they speak! What flights of fantasy will emerge? Come along and find out!

Saturday Aug 20, 2016

1:00 PM Reading: Ann Leckie
Kansas City Convention Center – 2203 (Readings)

Sunday Aug 21, 2016

11:00 AM Scenes That Changed Your Life
Kansas City Convention Center – 3501B

Science Fiction is fun, but it also inspires and can be a force for personal reflection, inspiration and change. The panelists explore what has impacted upon them and whether it is, or should be the job of creators to deliberately inspire. Do inspirational moments come by accident, or are they entirely personal?

1:00 PM The State of Feminist Fantasy
Kansas City Convention Center – 2205

On The Coode Street Podcast (#256), Suzy McKee Charnas and Pamela Sargent noted that while feminist fantasy exists, there isn’t an agreed upon canon, as there is for SF, nor is there an equivalent community of feminist writers and readers. Panellists discuss this statement, whether there is a difference viewing feminism through a fantasy lens, and whether there are fantasy feminist equivalents to Russ, Tiptree, and Butler. What are some good examples of feminist fantasy?

3:00 PM Can Hard Science Fiction be too Hard?
Kansas City Convention Center – 3501D

Allen Steele defines Hard SF as “the form of imaginative literature that uses either established or carefully extrapolated science as its backbone.” This may not be a perfect or final definition but it works on a basic level. With this in mind, is it possible that there can be too much science in Hard SF? Can the science make the work unreadable or unnecessarily complex or just plain ridiculous?

And of course I’ll be at the Hugo Awards, and around generally. More about that “around generally” later. If you see me, say hi! I plan to have ribbons, buttons, and pins for giving out until I don’t have any more, and I’m looking forward to seeing you!

Vericon Schedule

Sheesh, I haven’t posted my schedule for Vericon this weekend!

I got into Boston yesterday, and had a lovely time at Pandemonium Books and Games. I read a bit from Ancillary Mercy, and answered lots of interesting questions, and signed books, and it was just a tremendous amount of fun.

Vericon itself begins today–this evening, I think. And here’s what I’m doing:

Friday
8-8:45 PM reading

Saturday:
10 AM-11 AM: Fictional Politics
Lois McMaster Bujold has described SF as “fantasy of political agency”. People have argued seriously that there are so many kings in fantasy because democratic politics is too hard to explain to the reader. How do we write political stories and make them interesting?
Seth Dickinson, Ada Palmer, Ann Leckie. Moderator: Malka Older

11 AM-12 PM: Designing Futures
Starting from now, how do we extrapolate the trends to come up with a science fiction future that hasn’t already been done to death?
Malka Older, Ann Leckie, Wesley Chu. Moderator: Ada Palmer

12-12:45 PM: Guest of Honor Speech (Ann Leckie)

1-2 PM Book Signing

Sunday:
10-11 AM: Awards — What Difference Do They Make?
People talk about the importance of awards in the field, but are they just a nice sign of appreciation or do they really make any difference to your career? Our panelists have won enough that they ought to know.
Ann Leckie, Wesley Chu, Greer Gilman. Moderator: John Chu.
&nbsp
11 AM-12 PM: Glory and Death
What keeps us coming back using these things to power our stories, and on what levels is it realistic?
Ann Leckie, Seth Dickinson, Fran Wilde. Moderator: Jo Walton

It sounds like a fun weekend, I’m looking forward to it.
